RDA Volunteers

Our volunteers find a rewarding outdoor activity, helping others to experience the joy of horses, and at the same time building their own fitness and a sense of wellbeing. Friendships are formed - with people and with horses – and volunteers become part of a team. We value each person's contribution and the enthusiasm and life experience they bring.

Our volunteers help with leading horses and ponies during lessons and rides out, walking next to riders to reasure and keep an eye, grooming the horses, tack up putting on saddles and bridles, caring for the horses mucking out their sables, giving water and hay, keeping the place tidy and more.

Training and support

Volunteers are trained and supported to be confident and safe in the actvities they undertake. Many start with no experience with horses. All are given training and support by our RDA group and the riding school staff at Wanstead Community Riding Stables. Volunteers register with WCRS CIC and are covered by their insurance.

Activities

Our volunteers help run Coffee With Horses Mornings. Here carers for people with dementia and family members they care for are enjoying grooming Molly, a lovely morning organised together with Redbridge Carers Support Services

Corporate Volunteering

We offer tailored Corporate and Group Volunteer Days designed to meet your organisation’s needs. Please email us to discuss your requirements and plan your day.

No prior experience is required, as all volunteers are supervised by our experienced team. We simply ask that participants wear clothes they do not mind getting muddy and bring wellington boots or sturdy footwear.

Holding volunteer days involves preparation, supervision and materials. We ask that corporate groups contribute towards refreshments, tools, equipment and materials used during the day, as well as a fee to cover team supervision and administration costs associated with planning. As a registered charity, we do not charge VAT. Contributions directly support the charity, upkeep of the stables, the care of our horses and our wider community work.

We recognise that volunteering is not a regular day at work, and we believe it is important that all volunteers have a clear understanding of how they will spend their time with us.

A typical volunteering day schedule is as follows:

9:00am at the Stables, where your group will be welcomed with tea or coffee, introduced to the team, briefed on the day’s activities and given a full health and safety induction. Boots and gloves will be provided as needed.

9:30am to 12:30pm, volunteers will collect tools and head to their assigned tasks.

Activities may include grooming and brushing horses, cleaning tack, painting and maintenance work, clearing cobwebs in the stables, gardening, or cutting back bushes and outdoor areas.

There is the option of a short mid-morning break if required.

12:30pm to 1:30pm Volunteers should bring a packed lunch. Alternatively, there is a café within a six-minute walk in the park and a Tesco approximately ten minutes away.

1:30pm to 3:00pm, either continuing the morning’s project or moving on to a new task.

3:00pm, the group will begin packing away tools, tidying work areas and washing up, finishing at approximately 3:30pm to 4:00pm.
